The Ultimate Guide to Chrismukkuh 2016

Please tell me you’re familiar with Chrismukkuh? You know, Chrismukkah? The all-important made-up holiday, originated on The OC, that combines the best of two festive holidays?

Oh yeah, that Chrismukkuh. Thank you, Seth Cohen. I will forever love you. Up until this year, this fake (but totally real in my heart) holiday, has been a pipe dream. The last time Hanukkah fell on Christmas Eve was in 1959. This holiday is 57 years in the making, friends. Let’s make it one to remember. Granted, these two holidays have absolutely nothing to do with each other religiously or otherwise, but hey, in the spirit of the season and for the joy of bringing people together…Seth, we will honor your creation and we will make you proud.

Growing up Jewish I was perfectly content with celebrating Hanukkah (although secretly every Jewish-American kid just wants a Christmas Tree), however, when I met Eric, aka the goyum, I was crazy-super-excited to have a real excuse to decorate for Christmas and blast Christmas music 24/7. It’s the little things.

So here it is, friends. The Ultimate Guide to Chrismukkuh 2016. And you know I’ve got you covered on all bases: Music, Movies, Crafts, Food. The works. Let’s not disappoint one of the best traditions ever created by television. Let’s embrace it and do it up right.

The Ultimate 2016 Chrismukkuh Guide

The Ultimate Chrismukkuh Guide

The Hanukkah Song by Adam Sandler

This is the original, the one and only Hanukkah anthem. Watch it here on YouTube.

Michael Buble’s Christmas Album

This is an absolute necessity for me. I pretty much listen to this 24/7. If you have Amazon Prime you can stream most of the album for free. If not, you can buy it here. Also an option, add Michael Buble’s Holiday Radio to your Pandora line-up (as if you didn’t already have it).

Eight Crazy Nights

Totally out there but actually funny. Last year it was streaming on Netflix, but this year it looks like you can get it on Netflix DVD. You can also buy or rent it on Amazon.

A Rugrats Chanukah

Never gets old, does it? The Pickles’ were one of the original Jewish TV families. If you have Hulu, you can watch it for free. If not, buy or rent on Amazon.

Now of course there are WAY more Christmas movies than there are Hanukkah ones, so here’s our list of non-negotiables. We watch these movies every year. Most are available for rent or purchase on Amazon and some are available via DVD on Netflix. True story, we have Claymation Christmas and Jugband Christmas on VHS (#oldschool).

  • Home Alone (the original)
  • Christmas Vacation
  • Scrooged
  • Elf
  • The Holiday (sometimes I make Eric watch this and sometimes I’ll watch it when he’s out)
  • Love Actually
  • Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas
  • Emmett Otter’s Jugband Christmas
  • Charlie Brown’s Christmas Special
  • The Cartoon Classics (Frosty, Rudolph, etc.)
  • The Muppet Christmas Carol

Last, but not least, and definitely most important of all: FOOD. For what is the holiday season without copious amounts of food? Christmas may have all the good music, but Hanukkah has potatoes fried in oil and DONUTS. ‘Nuff said. Below is a list of must-make Chrismukkuh dishes.

So I would love to tell you that I have an incredible, heirloom latke recipe handed down from my Jewish grandmother, buuuuut I don’t. What I do have though is a delicious, easy, foolproof recipe from Food Network. Whatever works, right?

Easy Potato Latkes from Food Network

Christmas Tree Pitas from Betty Crocker

Classic Matzo Ball Soup from Miri in the Village

Roasted Turkey Roulade from Ina Garten (this requires a little bit of extra work, but we made it one year and it was a showstopper)

Mini Eggnog Donuts from Two Peas and Their Pod (ultimate Chrismukkuh dessert combining donuts and eggnog!)

Spiced Pumpkin-Gingerbead Holiday Brunch Waffles from Because I Said So Baby

Overnight Eggnog French Toast from Two Peas and Their Pod (we use SilkNog to make it dairy-free)
