Our Gluten-Free Journey
It’s important to note that no one in my family has Celiac Disease, so if that is a concern for you, it’s important to be extra certain about the products you buy.
We’ve been “doing” gluten-free now for almost a year now and in that time I have for sure found my groove with what to buy at the grocery store – and also learned that some of the things I was already buying happened to be gluten-free!
The reason we went gluten-free?

One of my daughters had been struggling with severe eczema and we had tried so many things, but it wasn’t until I found the right pediatric dermatologist that I learned what we really needed to be doing.
We have always bought less-processed foods and used fragrance-free products but we really committed to using limited ingredient soaps and laundry detergent and got serious about cutting out gluten.
- We switched to this laundry detergent
- And this lotion
- Plus this unscented body wash
The one thing we hadn’t tried was a gluten elimination diet and once we tried that, I started seeing immediate improvement in her skin!
When you first start out doing a gluten-free diet it can be really hard to know what to buy.
There’s a lot of reading ingredients, trying out different versions, and figuring out what has a good texture and also tastes good.
Of course some products will be more processed than others, but ultimately when it comes to convenience – store-bought food is often necessary, especially during busy seasons.
That being said, I have discovered some less processed, pre-packaged snacks that save my sanity, especially during our busy activity season.
What is a good gluten-free snack for kids?
When it comes to buying gluten-free products for my kids, I look for:
- less processed, limited ingredients
- low in refined/added sugars
- naturally gluten-free
When we met with the pediatric dermatologist she told us that refined sugar and gluten are two of the main culprits for eczema and keratosis pilaris, which my daughter has on top of the eczema.
So this is where we decided to start!
Of course these aren’t hard & fast rules – my kids still eat sugar and you’ll see plenty of that on this list, they are kids after all.
But overall the purpose of the gluten-free elimination was to clear up my daughter’s eczema and itching, so I know it’s helpful for the foods I serve to be “cleaner” – I mean don’t we all feel better when we eat better?
